Our New Monthly Money Meeting

Table Top with a Pen and a Paper PadMy wife and I always meet before the month begins to plan the upcoming month’s budget. We talk about our projected income, expenses, and plan out the month the best we can before it begins. I teach this, we follow it, and it works for us very well. The problem is, sometimes when we simply sit down to talk about the budget our meeting turns more into a marathon as we start talking about different things. We find ourselves talking about our goals, savings, investing, and all different kinds of planning. For me this is not a problem, I could talk about money all day, I enjoy it. For my wife, well, she would rather talk about what we have and then move on to something more enjoyable for her. This got me thinking…

Why don’t we just meet twice a month?

  • Once before the month begins to complete the budget/cash flow plan
  • Once in the middle of the month to discuss debt, savings, investments, large purchases, and any other financial planning

This will hopefully accomplish a few things. First, it will shorten each meeting. Each meeting should be under a half hour and everyone has one hour a month to spend planning their lives. This will make the person who doesn’t particularly like to talk about money for an extended period of time very happy. Second, this will allow us the proper time to discuss other important topics like investments, savings, large purchases, and any goals we might have.

Will this work? I think so, but we just started this last month and we are definitely not as smooth as when we do our budget. The thing about money is it is always moving. This means you have to always be adjusting. The key thing to remember is that money has a way of intertwining itself into almost every aspect of your life so simply setting aside time to discuss it is very important and can help you prosper.
